The Three Most Common Podcast Producing Mistakes
Podcast production is a relatively simple process especially, if you compare it to other broadcast mediums like T.V, Radio, Film etc. Most podcast producers who suffer a little or lag behind are “technologically challenged” to begin with. There’s no shame in that. There are always people who are great with certain techniques and need a little guidance for other comparatively simple tasks. Its just the way our brain works.

Most podcasters, when starting out without a film, T.V. or audio background make these 3 common mistakes. Read on to find out what these are and how you can and should avoid them.
1. Recording Space Conundrum:
Choosing the right space or the best area for recording audio can be a bit tricky. More so, because most of us have a false sense of how audio quality is preserved during recording. Here is list you should go through before choosing a space for recording:
A quite space is obviously good but if the space has a low, nice ambiance that could be good for certain types of podcasts.
Empty marbled floors, big tables/windows, blank walls etc. all create an echo like effect that makes the recorded sound far off. Remember you can’t fix an echo in editing.
When buying a microphone, try and find a directional microphone to get rid of any unwanted and abrasive noise in the enviornment.
2. Recording Seperate Channels:
If you are doing a podcast where there is just a single recorded voice you can pretty much do well without recording separate channels. If however, you are formatting a podcast that has an interview or conversational style you might want to think about the audio channels.
The problem arises when a conversation is recorded over Skype or a single microphone. The audio tends to sound like a tennis match where the listeners will feel like they need to turn form one side to the other to hear a particulsr voice. Its very distancing and uncomfortable. The easiest fix for this is to record the audio in channels.
The stereo channels are left and right. All you need to do after recording the conversation in stereo is pan the left channel to right (less than half of the dial or meter in your software) and right to left. Voila! Your audio sounds like its been recorded in the same room as your listener.
3. Compression is a Must:
Last but not the least, good old compression. Audio compression levels out the volume spikes in an audio. You will locate this handy tool in the effects menu of your software. It’s called the compressor. Without compression your audio will sound rather amateur.
