Like with pretty much everything else in our work lives, podcasting needs to be planned ahead of time and scheduled for a regular publishing date to be successful. The fun bit is, you can schedule your podcasts however you want. There is no hard and fast rule that dictates how many podcasts should be published per week and when.

The ideal way to create your podcast production and publishing schedule is by determining:

  • The time it takes for you to produce a podcast.
  • When your audience is most likely to listen to your podcast.
  • How much time do you have to spare per week for your podcasts.
  • How frequently is your direct competition producing podcasts.

Once you have these answered you can create a schedule around these. That way you will never feel taxed and your audience won’t suffer any disruptions in service. You don’t really have to pay all that much attention to your competition’s podcasting frequency. Just knowing what they are up to will guide you on what’s the best day and time to publish podcasts in your niche.

While scheduling your production, you need to set apart specific intervals of time for the following tasks:

Scripting the Podcast:

Writing down either a script or the format for the podcast – even doing some research will require you to set aside a chunk of time. This will depend on how familiar you are with the podcast’s topic and/or guest/s.

Lining up Interviews, Talkbacks or Conversational Podcasts:

Lining up guests and audiences for either live interaction or recordings will definitely require some scheduling. You will have to find a time optimal for both you and the interacting party.

Recording:

Most of the time you will need peace and quite to record your audio. To do this you will have to pick out a time where your recording pace is the quietest and available (in some cases). E.g. you might want to record your podcast during a lunch break in your office.

Editing:

Depending on your software skills you need to set aside a ball-park amount of time for editing the recording.

Publishing:

You can do everything else ahead of time and just hit the publish button on your podcast publishers when you know your audience will want and expect it.

Marketing:

This is the step most podcasters forget to schedule. And marketing is what can truly damage your podcast’s success. Set a generous amount of time aside for marketing. If you don’t have a lot of time to spare then market strategically. Never forgetting Facebook or Tweeting your podcast as soon as it comes out.

That’s it guys, keep it rolling!
