The first priority with guest blogging is to get your postings in front of as many people as possible. This requires identifying the most popular bloggers within your niche. Equally important as the number of readers is how engaged they are with the blog. Blogs with readers who interact most frequently by leaving comments, showing social approval signals and engaging in other actions with the host blog engage its readers effectively.

Among the most popular bloggers in your niche, narrow your search down by looking for those blogs that have the most comments, shares, and social signals. Remember: Numbers are not enough. Engagement is also critical to maximizing your exposure to passionate fans of your niche.

Also important is the reputation of the blogger. Once you identify a host blog you think will be a good place to post a guest blog, check out the background of the blogger to see if he or she has good reputation within the blogging community and within your niche. Read some of the comments the blog’s readers are leaving. Are they positive and supportive? Do they show that the readership is engaged in the content, or are the comments unrelated and possibly spam?

You also want to make sure that the target host blog is frequently updated. If the blog has not been updated in a while, or its new postings are infrequent, it may not be the best place to publish your guest blog.

If the site you choose has received any kind of award from a reputable organization, it has a better chance of being considered an authoritative site by search engines such as Google. These should be legitimate awards handed out by reputable organizations, not the made-up awards bloggers often pass back and forth to each other.

There are also things to avoid in choosing a host blog for your guest blog post. Don’t waste your time and effort creating high-value guest blog content for blogs that don’t have a clearly-defined target audience. Blogs that accept all types of content, rather than niche-specific content, is not optimal. Similarly, blogs that have a lot of advertising that is not relevant to the blog’s niche an indication of a low quality site, especially if the ads are for such things as pornography, penile enhancement products, and gambling sites.

Sites with confusing structure, poor design and poor interface offer a poor experience to the reader and probably aren’t going to bring you the highly-targeted traffic you want.

Avoid host blogs that have no contact information or make it difficult for readers to leave comments or interact with the blogger. Also, blogs with out of date posts, uninformed and uninteresting content are probably not the best place for your guest blog.

Placing guest blogs in popular blogs in your niche with a lot of dedicated readers is a great way to drive traffic to your landing pages, but make sure the blog you choose to offer your guest blog is the right one for you.
