Understanding Video Distribution Platforms - Get A Grip On Online Video Distribution Platforms

Get A Grip On Online Video Distribution Platforms

While virtually everyone on the Internet knows what YouTube is, there are dozens if not hundreds of video platforms that many people do not know about. For those of you just getting started with video blogging, YouTube should be your main focus (as it will expose you to the widest potential audience). However, those of you who desire to tap a more specific audience should highly consider expanding your horizons.

While YouTube is by far the largest video platform, many smaller platforms are focused on one subject, niche or topic. Given this, it could be much easier to build an audience around a cooking vlog if you found a video platform dedicated to aspiring chefs (this is just an example). This stands in stark contrast to YouTube, where it is very easy to get lost in the sea of videos that flood their system everyday.

While it is beyond the scope of this article to cover every video platform out there, we will highlight some of the bigger platforms while showing you how to search for smaller, niche-focused platforms on your own.

Daily Motion

Similar to YouTube, Daily Motion is a video-sharing site that requires an account to sign-up and post videos. For the most part their system is focused on news style content. This is not to say their content is entirely news based, however they typically give preference to newer, fresher videos that highlight current topics and can be consumed in bite sized chunks; great for those of you who will be releasing content on a frequent basis.

Meta Café

Metacafe is another top 5 video portal, with a focus on entertainment and how to videos. While MetaCafe does feature funny amateur videos now and then, their content is much more focused on interviews with celebrities, movies, video games, and ‘how to’ videos (tech, cooking, etc.). Given this, Meta Café is great for those of you covering the entertainment industry, video games, or providing how to tips via your vlog.

Break

Break.com is a top 10 video portal dedicated entirely to funny videos and video clips. Similar to YouTube, they allow users to create their own channels, and include a variety of professional and amateur produced content. As you can imagine, this platform is great for those of you who want to use your vlog to entertain others using comedy.

How to Find Niche Video Portals

The truth is there are hundreds of video portals out there. To search for portals related to your niche, you can hop on Google and type in “Your Topic videos.” While many of the results will be videos themselves, a thorough search should help you identify any portals that are specifically related to your topic. And while there may or may not be portals specific to your niche, seeing what portals other people in your industry appear on will give you a good place to start. Tip; If you decide to go for many different digital video distribution platforms you could benefit from using a video distribution software, system or program.
