Avoid These 6 Common Pitfalls At All Cost when Ghostwriting

Taking on too much

Spreading yourself to thin will be the fastest road away from your ghostwriting career. Know you limits and only take on work that you know you can complete without it getting stressful. Be smart about making money online, when you can find jobs that will pay $15 each for 20 articles, then taking on a 100 articles at $3 each will have you burned out in no time.

Taking on a project because it pays more

Seeing a big budget for a project does not mean you have to bid on it. Pick projects based on your area of expertise not the dollar signs against it. If you pick projects where you can’t deliver you will have unhappy clients, a lot wasted time and effort and possibly bad feedback.

Failing to price your skills right

Another way to deal oneself the short end of the proverbial stick is by pricing themselves too high or too low. If your hourly or per word rate is higher then what your skill set and experience deserves you will lose out on good jobs. Consequently, if you price yourself too low you might win a lot of projects but you’ll end up with the nine to midnight grind instead of the nine to five.

Giving precedence to your creative narrative over the client’s

Everyone gets it you are the professional ghostwriter, that’s why you get hired in the first place. However, this does not give you the rights to override your client’s creative choices. If you have a better way of writing something or you think a project is headed in the wrong direction, politely tell the client. Changing the direction of their project, without their approval is unprofessional at best. Altering the work after being specifically told not to do so is probably your best shot at getting fired.

Not establishing yourself as an expert

Always think about developing a name, a distinguishable identity or a brand to help establish you as an expert in your field. Take every opportunity you can to use your signature, keep you screen name professional and consistent across different job sites. Also, make sure you emphasize your greatest strengths as a ghostwriter.

Not following up with clients

If a client stops communicating with you, it is your job to open up the message center and ask what is going on. Following up with clients asking them politely what you should expect next is basic work etiquette. If you don’t show interest in the job, someone else will take it.

Treating freelancing as a holiday

Take your work seriously and be disciplined. This is possibly the hardest part of the job when you work from home and all your favorite distractions are within arms reach. Work out a timetable that works for you and follow it to get organized and bring discipline to your work life or you’ll end up missing a lot of deadlines watching sponge bob.
