Starting a New Ghostwriting Project? Follow These 7 Good Practices

#1. Get As Much Out of the Client as You Can

The first step to getting any project started out right is to find out what your client wants. Do not always expect the client to have a fully fleshed out idea of what they want. Ask them questions about the style or tone they want for the content. You can ask them about their target audience, which will help you to better understand the audience you are writing for. Bottom line, if you are unsure about anything, ask your client before making a decision you might have to revise.

#2. Create a Schedule for the Project

Always create a schedule for a project, even when the client doesn’t have a deadline for the project. You have to decide the amount of time you are willing to spend on every project. If a client pays $300 for a project that doesn’t have a hard deadline and you drag it for three months, you only get paid $100 a month. Create a schedule with soft and hard deadlines and try to meet them.

#3. Focus Your Research

Deciding the direction you want to take with your writing will help you narrow down your research. Create an outline for the project or decide on topics for different articles before you start researching the topic in depth. This way you will know where to go and what you are after, maximizing your research efforts.

#4. Create a To Do List

This is a good habit, not just for the absent minded, but for anyone taking on a large project or juggling different projects. Creating a to do list will help breakdown a project into sizeable chunks and it gives a sense of accomplishment as you tick items off the list.

#5. Get it Approved

Before you seriously start tackling the project, it would be wise to get an initial approval. Especially when the project is long. Start by submitting one article or 300 words for approval and once approved or revised you can proceed with the rest.

#6. Never Miss a Deadline

There is little more unprofessional than missing a deadline. In the real world, you would get fired or considered a liability for missing deadlines. Online ghostwriting is no different; no matter how good a writer you are, if you can’t meet deadlines you will not survive.

#7. Proofread and Hit Submit

Last but certainly not the least, proofreading. Before you hit submit in all your excitement to share the project with your client remember grammar and spelling mistakes in the age of spell check are unforgivable. Make sure your content is error free and ready to be used by the client.
